This is such a muggers’ paradise

I REFER to the article in The Press on September 1 – “Man found with head injuries near bridge”, where a man was found with serious head injuries and a fractured eye socket.

After a fantastic evening at the Mystery Plays, I walked back over Lendal Bridge and down the steps, under the bridge into North Street.

It was extremely difficult to see the steps as it was pitch black and I tripped at the bottom. It had been raining earlier in the evening and it was slippery.

Fortunately, I managed to keep upright but anyone perhaps not as agile could have been seriously hurt. It felt very eerie without lighting and even though I was not alone I felt very vulnerable. It is the perfect place for muggings and assaults.

Given that York has its share of low life and the new low level lighting, should one be surprised to hear of unprovoked attacks?

Attacks are not uncommon, they happen everywhere in the world not just York. If we light everything up it I'll look like any other city and attacks will still happen. Say safe, walk the long way round, if it looks dark down there don't go down there. A lady in the same area asked if I woud like a hand for £10, I thought not saying you to push my bike, flat tyre or not. Turns out she was on about something else.

the lights being out along North Street is a cable fault.

Do we actually know how he came to be injured? I can't remember the article saying he was mugged. If it was opposite the Maltings how do we know he didn't fall over the wall?
