Time and date

MAY I make a correction to the article by Stephen Lewis (The Press, August 24) about the Great War?

Great Britain declared war on Germany at 11pm on Tuesday, August 4, 1914. The British Foreign Secretary, Sir Edward Grey, said: “The lamps are going out all over Europe, we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime.”

In my collection of postcards I have a birthday card postmarked – Godalming 8PM 4 AU 14 – one of the last items of mail before the outbreak of war.

Another postcard is dated – Hastings 8.30PM 5 AU 14 – “Having a good time with glorious weather.”
