Fuel open house
1:03pm Saturday 1st September 2012 in Letters By Reader's letter
FUEL prices are rising. I would like to invite people to see how solid wall insulation and solar panels have cut my fuel bills by 50 per cent in a Victorian end-terrace house.
Despite the falling feed in tariff rates, the cost of the panels has fallen dramatically, so this is still a good deal.
Come to an open house between 3.30pm and 5pm on Sunday, September 16, at the address below. The event is free; just drop in.
Graham Smith, 24 Grange Street, York

One reason prices are so high is because of the subsidies placed on everyone's bill towards wind turbines and solar panels. If we all had solar panels our bills would rocket even further. Cavity insulation can be a dodgy thing for the majority with a cavity wall pre 90's. Filling the cavity can cause dampness and not easy to remove the problem there after. The cavity is there to keep dampness out.
With global warming do we need all this heating and insulation anyway? Well, the other night we had a record August low near to here, not much above freezing. Before anyone tells me that is local and not Global then google Darwin in Tropical North Australia, they had a record August low too.
The problem is that the government is hell bent on meeting its renewable target, regardless of the consequences and cost. You might hear about drought in some places ruining the corn harvest and raising the price of food but they will still be turning much of it into damaging Ethanol perhaps leaving some people hungry. When you see EN228 on the pump you know it contains 5% Ethanol, scheduled 10% next year, removing many vehicles over 6 yrs old from the road by stealth, like the way this stuff was introduced, and the Green surcharge on your energy bill.
Wise up please.

Solar electricity generating panels on a roof are the triumph of hard sell over common sense. They cost and do not last for ever. By the time you've recouped your investment they need replacing, and what is the energy cost of producing them?
Solar water heating plants as seen in southern Europe might be economical, but in our climate?
