Plea over loss of bus service
9:00am Saturday 18th August 2012 in Letters
ON BEHALF of all the residents of our parish, can we urge First to reverse its decision to axe the loop the number 11 bus takes through the area.
If this cut goes ahead, it will cause considerable problems for many, especially the more elderly residents who rely on this bus to go to collect their pensions, go to town and visit friends and relatives.
Can we respectfully remind First that they are committed to providing a service for all residents of York, not just a chosen few.
David Meek and Janice Parkin, Churchwardens, St Chad’s Church, Campleshon Road, York.
• I AM sorry to hear that pensioners in the South Bank area are to lose their bus service.
I would like to let them know that the Dial-a-Ride service is available to people over 60 in that area.
This is a door-to-door service run by York Wheels on behalf of City of York Council . You have to pre-book the service by phoning 551441. Dial-a-Ride travels to the following destinations from South Bank:
• Tuesday: City centre and supermarkets 9am to 10am pick up or Monks Cross 1.30pm to 2.30pm pick-up;
• Thursday: Monks Cross pickup 10am to 11am or 1.30pm to 2.30pm;
• Friday: Askham Bar pick-up 9am to 10am or 1.30pm to 2.30pm and city centre and supermarkets in town 10am to 11am.
The return journey with a concessionary pass costs £2.
Ruth Potter , Operations manager, York Wheels Ltd.

The company has NO social obligation except to comply with the law of the land, any more than a company selling groceries,
(N. B. I consider this a scandal, and campaigned against bus deregulation in the 80s)

This bus problem seems to be nationwide, Sadly the problem stems from the well meaning concessionary pass scheme, a good idea on paper but totally impractical. Perhaps instead of offering free travel, a reduced price might have been more practical.
It should have always been on a tier system, based on how much money an OAP has and whether they have regular acces to a car (even if not their own) or not.
I'll also point out that Harrogate Coach Travel "Connexions Buses" run service 21 to both the city centre (morrisons) and Askham Bar through South Bank.

I particularly like this quote "This is one of the consequences of the Liberal Democrats failing to seriously consider a Quality Bus Contract that would have given the council more of a say over frequency of services and fare levels. "
Well Cllr Potter you've spent £250,000 of residents hard earned money on said Quality Bus Contract in the last two years and it has achieved precisely nothing
