We’ve paid for it

BH Smith (Letters, August 15) accused me of “backdoor socialism” by suggesting independent schools in York open their doors to state school pupils. Mr Smith should note that, under the Charities Act 2006, independent schools are given charitable status in return for providing public benefit, which includes giving local people access to their facilities.

This apparently amounts to a £100 million tax-payer funded subsidy each year. “Backdoor socialism” or not, I ask that the private schools in York fling open their sports hall doors, embrace all York’s kids and leave a true Olympic sporting legacy in our city. Either that or we should have our £100 million back.
