Fine department

I WAS very pleased to hear that Richard Gale had received an award from the Macular Disease Society (The Press, July 18).

I don’t have macular disease but I do have two other recurrent eye conditions, for which I have to attend the eye clinic at least once every two months and every two weeks when I am having a flare-up.

I have always found Mr Gale and his colleagues, including all the nurses and technicians, to be efficient, friendly and approachable, and in addition they treat you as a person, not a condition.

Mr Gale allows me to have an agreed action plan rather than telling me what I must do.

As someone who has had to attend the hospital regularly for the past 50 years due to other long-standing medical conditions, I can honestly say I have found the eye clinic to be the one that is most helpful and which it is a pleasure to attend.

I believe many other departments could learn a lot from them.
