The wrong parallel

DAVID Quarrie does not need me to support him, but when R Keeler (Letters, August) quotes Hitler as an example of why we should not ignore Bahar al Assad in Syria, what is Mr Keeler thinking we should do?

I hate tyranny in every shape and form, but can we help the poor people of Syria by getting involved apart from diplomatically. What about Yemen or Qatar or the many people suffering in Africa?

I remember we appeased Hitler up to 1939, we ignored him during his first invasions of surrounding areas and we let Hitler re-arm Germany while we did nothing officially.

When Poland was invaded we had no choice but to help them as we had an agreement with France to go to their aid. By this time Churchill had taken over and stopped any further appeasement beginning to re-arm and prepare, but we could have narrowly lost the war at Dunkirk.

When Tony Blair followed George W Bush to oust the butcher of Iraq after he had used weapons of mass destruction on his own countrymen, Blair was branded a war criminal and many thousands marched in the streets.

Saddam did kill over 3000 kurds by gassing in the village of Halabja. However that was in 1988 when he was an ally, so the USA let him get away with it.
It was 15 years later when Bush and Blair attacked. In terms of the slaughter of the innocent, them make Saddam look like a rank amateur. The world will never forgive the crimilals who inflicted this holocaust onto the innocent people of Iraq who suffered under Saddam, and now suffer a thousand times more under the occupation.
The weapons of mass destruction? It was a lie.
