City-centre horrors

WE MADE a trip to York for the day last Saturday, and enjoyed an absolutely fabulous visit to the National Railway Museum, which was, by far, the best museum we have ever gone to.

However, as we walked into the city we came across so much antisocial behaviour that, quite simply, it put us off coming to York again.

For example, at 5.30pm there were several police vehicles in attendance at a certain hostelry following a fight. What concerns me for your beautiful city is that if we are put off by such behaviour, then what on earth do overseas visitors make of this? Surely, it would put them off too.

All I can say is that I am glad that, as planned, we did not book to stay in a hotel and dine out, as I think we would have become quite fearful of the droves of so-called hen and stag parties who were clearly out to become drunk and disorderly out on the streets.

This issue really needs addressing now before York city centre, where we have honeymooned (twice), becomes a no-go area.

Couldn't agree more.
York is awful all day Saturday.
How on earth did we become a top stag and hen destination?

Firstly, how do you stop someone coming to our city and I bet the stag and hen do's put more money in to the York economy than the "regular" visitors. I don't think we are a top destination, more that we're a small city and the several stand out and amass in similar places.

secondly, it is a problem that the pubs and clubs will feed alcohol to any willing participant until they fall over. A drunken reveller will be more willing to spend than a sober one. Until the recourse is put on the shoulders of these pubs and clubs it will continue to detract from our city.

Couldn't agree more with the letter.

On Saturday two weeks ago, I got a train from Harrogate to York at 5pm. There were about 20 drunks chanting "No surrender..." etc etc. Nothing was said to them on the train, at least 10 people had to move carriages and when it arrived in York two policement stood and watched them make their way in to the City centre. The problem is, no one cares.

The town I come from originally had to have mounted police in situ on a Friday and Saturday night and from my recent experiences in York, it isn't far off.

I live in York, it's a great City, but the weekends are getting worse.

Thankfully there are still plenty of places in York where you can avoid the muppets, perhaps the council could publish a guide to the more pleasant establishments in York for those who want to avoid the wkd gangs.

Yorks night life is clear cut across the City. The "classy" more sensible side and then the "party" side. It doesnt take a genius to figure out which is which.

BUt for those slow on the uptake - if you want triples for singles, and wild hen parties, you want to be on the side with the train station. For more upmarket stuff, cross the river and head toward The Quarter.

EVERY city in the UK has idiots who drink themselves to a stupor, its not just a York problem. So how people can say it is, is beyond me.

Lets not forget that the weekend just gone was a Race meet - there is ALWAYS a lot more hassle and trouble when the races are on than when they're not.

So its the drunken visitors causing the hassle... not us locals who have to suffer through it.

Over-reaction and your loss if it puts you off returning.
I spent 30 years in York and enjoyed its nightlife for many of those. Since then i have lived in many other cities which without exception were all more threatening than a night out in York.
I'm happy that the City hasn't completely become a museum and that people can enjoy the variety of its nightlife.

then go elsewhere, if yorkies wanna get messed up then they should be allowed to in their own city. you as a visitor should accept our right to do so.
