Oh, don’t listen...

ONCE again, we have to put up with your correspondent David Quarrie (Letters, July 16).

Now he castigates the excitement, the sheer joy, of so many great characters from all over the British Isles who have carried with pride the Olympic Torch.

The wonder and sheer determination of so many local heroes, some hardly able to move unaided, carrying the torch has been superb, and David has no right to deride them.

He says he has zero interest in the Olympics. Bully for him. Millions love them. Good luck to all the Britons who represent us. I admire them all.

We visit Alne Hall Cheshire Home near Easingwold every week to visit our oldest daughter. She has MS and lost her full time carer/husband a year ago. Two weeks ago we were there with old family friends down from Scotland for a week and keen to see Ruth.

The runner who took the torch from Peterlea for a stretch was there with the torch and all the residents had photos taken holding it. Some needed help to hold it. It brought a smile to the faces of everyone of them. Denis, old Minster choirboy and my lifetime friend, and myself got in on the act and I am sending him a copy of the two of us with the runner jointly holding the torch along with his 85th birthday card today. It made us feel like winners!!
