Give taxis a chance

I READ the letter headlined ‘Fares not fare’ (Letters, June 13) and had to give a loud cheer.

Finally, after being a taxi driver for nearly 20 years, it is nice to see somebody complaining about bus fares for a change and not denigrating taxi drivers for being a bunch of robbing so-and-sos.

People have been having a go at hackney carriage drivers for years, when it is the council which dictates the fares, not the hackney carriage drivers. If more people shared a taxi instead of using the buses and their own cars when they don’t need to, maybe that would cut down on the congestion and air pollution all these environmentalists are always banging on about.

If you use a taxi driver or a private hire with a regular contract, you may even save more money and, God knows, with things as they are at the moment any savings help wherever it comes from.

Nationalise taxis, pay drivers good wages and pensions and offer free taxi services to pensioners.

A couple of years ago i was stood at a bus stop in West Belfast, a black cab pulled up and 2 people who were waiting for the bus got in.
I asked the lady in front what was happening, she explained that taxis were allowed to pick up bus passengers on certain routes and charge them a certain fare.
Next taxi came along and i got in, he charged me the same fare that i was going to pay on the bus and dropped me off exactly where the bus would have.
Pensioners are the same, they swipe their bus pass on his machine and get off where they want on that particular route.
Buses arent as packed, taxis get some work instead of being parked up at ranks and everybody is happy, why not try it here?
