On Saturday, the seventh York World Naked Bike Ride will start at the Millennium Bridge soon after 4pm.

Everyone is invited who cares about the safety of cycling road-users, anyone who champions human-powered vehicles and anyone who thinks our addiction to fossil fuels is unsustainable and damaging.

In addition to cyclists and environmentalists, some will attend to celebrate “body freedom”, the notion that we all have a body, regardless of size, shape, scars or skin colour, and that non-sexual nudity is healthy and natural. However, it is mainly about bikes and cycling.

Many riders come in colourful costume or body paint. The event is a celebration as well as a protest. It is fun to watch and an experience to take part in. Our route is about six miles, taking in the Racecourse (where we’ll remember cyclists’ lives lost), the station, Minster, Barbican, Eye of York and Micklegate, before returning to Millennium Bridge before 6pm.

More information can be found by searching for worldnakedbikeride.org or on Facebook. Three bike shops have offered a £5 hire for the afternoon: Get Cycling, Cycle Heaven at the station and Giant on Lord Mayor’s Walk.
