The cruellest cuts

THE idea of 500,000 claimants losing their Disability Living Allowances (DLA) under Iain Duncan-Smith’s new austerity measures beggars belief.

Are there any depths to which this present Government will not sink in clawing back a few bob?

The new measures called Personal Independence Pay (PIP) is nothing short of Dickensian. People without limbs or confined to wheelchairs are not exempt from its Scrooge-like restrictions.

As we have seen with other welfare cost-cutting exercises, the object is to cruelly cut benefits regardless of the unfairness, suffering or degradation caused. Is this now the fate awaiting our brave, wartorn soldiers returning to an ungrateful Britain?

All the disabled want anyway is a “hand-up”, not a “hand-out”, but when unemployment has reached record levels under this present shambolic regime, a little mercy, a little compassion, is a small thing to ask for?

In a cave once inhabited by Neanderthals there is a grave of one of their disabled which had been adorned with flowers and lovingly cared for by the inhabitants. Their compassion reflects how low our own civilised order has sunk.

Remember PIP was the nickname for the orphan in Great Expectations.

Freudian slip Tories? Taking us back to Dickensian times?

I could imagine Eric Pickles as Mr Bumble. Ian Duncan Smith as Scrooge.

The idea that there are 500,000 claiming DLA when they could work is beggars belief.

If you broaden your search criteria, there's a job for everyone.

Perhaps it's not what you're good at, or perhaps it's not the most interesting or easiest job, but there's a job.

What a load of garbage.

There are over 3 million unemployed with dozens chasing each vacancy at times.

You should get into the real world old boy.

And who are you to say that someone is able to work? Most win on appeal.

This plan is plain nastiness from the nasty party.

Socialism is absent when family wills are being read out.To all you pretend socialists, make out your will to benefit the Arclight Centre & refuse any inheritance from your family, then your socialism will be credible.

I say, what a splendid idea!

Agreed. Most people inherit large amounts when they are middle aged and need it least.

I think small amounts of inheritance are fine; maybe up £50k, plus anything of sentimental value.

I forgot to add that inheriting large amounts can also go against capitalism and promoting economic growth: if people are going to inherit a lot, there is less incentive to go out and generate their own wealth or contribute something of value to society.

Who is anyone, except the professionally trained, to say whether someone's fit to work? Certainly not "YorkToff".

Do we say disabled people should just agree that they're ok to stay on benefits and "write them off"? Then you'll see the ones faking it on Rogue Traders and Crimewatch.

How many of these disabled could sit at a computer and work in an office? Quite a few. How many more would be able to other jobs if they wanted? Quite a few.

You'll be surprised how many could work if they had proper guidance and training.

Garbage not based on the facts.

You are confusing eligible disabled of varying degrees with crooks who are claiming benefits fraudulently.

What this crooked government is doing is forcing eligible disabled off benefits or reduced benefits and the biggest insult is there are no jobs for most of them as even the most abled people are struggling with mass unemployment.

YorkToff says...

I am not writing off the disabled that is an insult to the disabled.

The government is writing them off by creating mass unemployment and reducing their money.

It is the Tories who should be assessed by a general election.

Some pretty poor stuff on here. I have two severely disabled children, if someone wants to come and visit them and tell me what sort of 'job' they will be able to do, they are more than welcome. Contact me via the Press.

People who make their glib remarks can't possibly understand the challenge for many people just in daily life.

This apparently and sadly extends to ministers who are either cruel or stupid or both.

Ok then, I'll show you a daughter of a family friend. She has Cerebal Palsy and whilst she is about 30 years old she has a mind of a 3 year old - she is incontinent, drools, cannot speak, and spend most of the day humped over in a ball.
... I wonder if you'd stick to your statement of "there's a job for everyone" after you've seen her, you utterly despicable moron. Maybe one day you'll be run over by a bus and become paralysed from the nexk down, or maybe even like Stehpen Hawking whereby you can only move one eyelid - but of course "there's a job for everyone" isn't there so you'd be fine living without DLA.

Think about what you say before you make foolish comments that make you look like a complete ****.
