Getting around

FURTHER to the letter by Hugo Platt headlined “Ask any taxi driver” (Letters May 9) I would like to say, ask them this.

Do they think that having lots of taxis on the roads around York taking individuals to their destination is better than fitting 50+ customers in a warm clean bus? And why do they think bendy buses are a silly idea?

I think you will find that a taxi is not a cheap way to get around York, unless you are going a short distance. Buses are not expensive for the service you receive.

I can get a bus into town in ten minutes, as can many people.

Please don’t put down any mode of public transport in York as they all have their advantages and each one suits a different need.

Mrs T Williams, Rawcliffe, York

Surely taxi is the *worst* way of getting people around? Surely a private car is better, not having to lug an extraneous person around to achieve the same goal? I've never understood why they get priority like mass transport.

“I can get a bus into town in ten minutes, as can many people.”

So at any moment in time you can leave your front door, walk to the nearest bus stop, where a bus will arrive and deliver you into town, all in ten minutes . . guaranteed ?

Any houses for sale near you? – I want to live there.

far2bizzy, you have misread the letter. Mrs Williams says she CAN get into town in 10 minutes on a bus, (and so can I). She does NOT say that it invariably happens in that timescale and she did not say it was guaranteed, that was your word. In my case if I have just missed a bus it might take 20 minutes, nevertheless a quality bus service is a major part of the solution of York's traffic problems.

Mrs Williams must have misread or misinterpreted the original letter which wasn't saying let's have more taxis, it was saying your common or garden taxi driver has more sense when it comes to transport policy than actual transport planners.
