Stamp of history

I READ with interest the item “Postcards from the past show old York” (May 9), and would make the following comment.

The halfpenny stamp for postcards had almost a lifespan of 50 years from October 1, 1870, on the introduction of postcards in Great Britain, until June 3, 1918, when it was increased to one penny due to the escalating costs of the Great War.
