A fitting response?

IMAGINE the size of five car parking spaces. Now imagine building a two-bedroom house on that space.

Impossible? Not according to City of York Council. This is a proposed development in a quiet courtyard of housing off Huntington Road. The proposed house will only have windows to the front, as to put any on the sides or back would severely affect the privacy of surrounding residents. A single garage was built on an adjacent parking bay. Retrospective planning permission was refused, one of the comments from the council being that the garage would “…detract from the character of the area, through appearing intrusive and incongruous in a location that residents would expect to appear relatively open”. Double standards?

Are we really that desperate to meet government targets?
