Flooding is down to poor maintenance
8:28am Monday 14th May 2012 in Letters By Reader's letter
I REFER to your heading “Flooding row over cash cuts” (The Press, May 5).
I don’t know where Coun Williams has been recently, but there has been some serious flooding of roads in the York area caused not by overflowing rivers or streams but by blocked drains and drainage pipes.
Many people were seriously delayed and some did not even get to work at all. The ring road was almost impassable and roads near Monks Cross were closed altogether.
The majority of this was caused by a lack of maintenance. I was told that there are now only two tankers for the whole of the York area – how ridiculous is this? We hear a lot about blocked gullies but often the problem is blocked pipe work.
This occurs because ‘fetting’ is not being carried out – without this, gully clearance is irrelevant.
So come on City of York Council, wake up to what has been going on for many years and start taking some proper action – flooding of local roads has become a joke.
D Lewis, Shipton Road, York.
