The good, bad and ugly
11:40am Tuesday 8th May 2012 in Letters
PERHAPS in these modern times we could do worse than endorse the Utilitarianism movement of the Victorian era.
Its principle was that the greatest happiness for most people was the criterion of morality. What is good is pleasure and happiness, and what is bad is the type of unwholesome and distressing news items that are thrust at us all the time by radio and TV.
Psychologists say these can have a negative effect, even subconsciously.
Also, their belief was that if we pursue what we believe to be our own happiness and contentment, then what we do will spread happiness to others and automatically be for the general good of society.
