  • "It's not a campaign to 'do away with the concept of affordable housing'.

It's about the removal of discriminatory, punitive, planning policies, which force housebuilders to provide social housing, for which they get nothing for the land and receive less than it costs to build the houses they have to handover to RSL's.

We are however also busily exposing York Council's failure with their Core Strategy for their LDF, which as it stands is unsound. This will mean less posts on this thread, but, we promise that normal service will be resummed in due course."

Building our future

THE strategic manager of the CITB Construction Skills is right when he says we must build our way out of recession (Letters, April 27).

The problem is that over the past 15 years, excessive regulations and burdens have been heaped on builders to the point where it is no longer worthwhile to undertake speculative projects.

The demands and expectations placed on builders have become ridiculous. The potential rewards are minimal but the financial risks are enormous. That is why so many of them, like myself, have put away the tools indefinitely.

John Jones, Ex-house builder, Sand Hutton Manor, York.
