Why do we elect them?

MODERN day politicians often make appalling decisions. Look at the way the country has deteriorated in the past 20 years.

They rise to the top if their face fits, keep their heads below the parapet and follow the party line.

Fine examples are Menzies Campbell, Yvette Cooper and David Cameron. They become power-struck, think they can “walk on water”; they are possibly stressed out and incapable of making decisions based on logic.

The very worst any country can do is overfill itself with people, but in spite of all the negative results, this is still carrying on. Blair, Brown or Cameron – not one of them does what the vast majority of people voted for them to do.

Tempting ... but dangerous.

Green, Lib Dem, Tory and Labour all back the 2008 Ed Miliband Climate Act. This piece of legislation alone will cripple the UK and any chance of an economic recovery. Your point is a good one Michael and why people elect self interested people and allow propaganda, such as the Global Warming scam to be believed are the real issues. It's well into May and one still needs the heating on. Can't even plant bedding plants because of the frost tonight! Global Warming indeed!

Once again ColdAsChristmas hijacks the thread to make his monomaniacal point. I concede he might be right about climate change (though I doubt it!) because I'd be the first to admit I'm not an expert in these things ... but the issue here is the fundamental nature of parliamentary democracy itself. I really can't get my head round the mentality of people who don't/won't vote! Sure ... often the choice of candidates leaves much to be desired; but if they're all we've got then we have to make the best of a bad job! The alternative is totalitarianism of one sort or another.

Personally, I WOULD like the option of registering an official abstention, perhaps in the form of a "None of the Above" box: at least that way the tellers/counters etc would know that I do have an opinion and am not just too bone idle to get out of bed on polling day!

It's the system. Politicians know it's very unfair in relation to the representation it delivers for voters. That's why there were less than one in three voters actually turning out for the local elections and one in five for the Lord Mayors.

They can't see anything in it for them and they have been punished for all the terrible things which have been going on in their names by the rich and powerful.

They have been beaten down until they have just lost heart. These absent voters, and those turning out, are paying while the culprits cruise off with their booty to avoid paying their fair share of taxes.

The hold of this 1% on our lives is so deep and wide spread that they can do as they like, and if one set of politicians are thrown out, the others will have to toe the line set by them too.

So who is going to be able to change it????
