Why lights changed...

THE introduction of advanced traffic signals and the new cycle lane on Holgate Road are primarily for the benefit of cyclists (previous letters).
Government traffic signals advice requires two signal posts for the advance stop line, so although we would have preferred not to include two, guidance made both necessary.
It should also potentially reduce the levels of air pollution to the directly on street residential properties on the left side of the road; this area is in breach of the long-term air quality limit for health-damaging vehicle emissions.
This route was identified by local residents in previous consultation work as one of their top priorities for improving cycling facilities, and we have been able to do that with overall the same time for motorists through the main junction. It is not a first either; there is a similar facility at Monk Bar.
Coun Dave Merrett, Cabinet member for city and environmental services.
