I WAS surprised to read that York’s Conservative leader, Coun Ian Gillies, is to seek the Conservative nomination to be Police and Crime Commissioner for North Yorkshire (The Press, April 27).
During a debate in a City of York Council meeting on October 6, in which I moved a motion calling on the Government to rethink its plans for the new commissioners, Coun Gillies specifically ruled himself out as a candidate for the role.
In fact he was quite emphatic on the point, making it clear that his political ambitions rested solely with becoming leader of City of York Council and stating that he did not see how he could do both things.
This prompts me to ask what has happened to change his mind. Furthermore, does this mean that he has abandoned his stated ambition become leader of the council and should we be expecting a new Conservative leader in the new future?
