Rights and wrongs

JOHN Bibby (Letters, February 14) states “we should support the right of the Iranian people to self-determination and peace”.

On the same day, one of a group of Iranian terrorists, while throwing grenades around Bangkok, blew his legs off when one of the grenades bounced off a taxi.

In the same week, Iranians had attempted to murder Israeli diplomats in India and Georgia.

At the present time, people of all religions and none are being slaughtered in Syria, Libya, Egypt, Iraq, Pakistan, Nigeria, Philippines and Tunisia; in the past few years people have been slaughtered in Bali, Berlin, London and New York.

The people committing these murders are not Germans, Americans, Israelis, Buddists or Sikhs.

They are members of a religion and have been indoctrinated from infancy to hate.

If someone tells you that when they get a gun they are going to kill you, you will stop them trying to get a gun.

When Iran tells Israel it will destroy it when it gets nuclear weapons, what should Israelis do – just wait?

Practically all Israeli military action since 1947 has been retaliatory action.

"Practically all Israeli military action since 1947 has been retaliatory action." Therein lies much of the problem. Retaliation breeds retaliation: allways has; always will.

Biblical Jews actually understood this. Their principle of "an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth was not - as so many today suppose - a justification for vengeance, but rather a "statute of limitation" - ie "Don't do more to the other guy than he's done to you!"

To paraphrase a comment in John le Carre's "Little Drummer Girl" (I think): "The trouble with modern Israel is she doesn't so much want the tooth as a full set of dentures!"

D. Martin provides a long list of Islamic countries in case we are too dim-witted to get his message.
In my book coded racism is a bad as any other kind.

D. Martin is totally misguided or ignorant as to the history of Israeli "retalliatiom". As in the 1981 bombing of Iraq (before the US and UK began 20 years of bombing) or the 2008 bombing of Syria, any expressed disaproval of the apartheid state is enough excuse for unprovoked aggression.

Puny rockets in defiance of the Hamas government somehow justifies the wholesale destruction of Gaza and its inhabitants.
When the settlers in the West bank regularly assault and murder their Palestinian neighbours all retalliation is "Terrorism".

If Iranians nuclear reactor is a threat to Israel, how much greater threat are Israels (estimated) 300 nuclear missiles?
