Is this a new use for brick pallets?

Is this a new use for brick pallets? Is this a new use for brick pallets?

Walking around York during the residents’ festival, I went down Stonebow, an area which I don’t normally visit, and saw what must be the ugliest building in York.

The sad thing is it only looks to be a year or so old, but seems to already have that derelict feeling.

I wondered if it was thought that as the bricks had come on wooden pallets, maybe they should be incorporated into the building.

Surely the ugliest building in York is further down Stonebow. The hideous concrete heap above Fibbers.

I agree with rothko, the ugliest building in york by far is the concrete monstrosity above fibbers. Should never have got planning permission.

According to some the ugly monstrosity is the splash palace, but have to agree, look up sometime and see that concrete box, terrible

I must also agree – but I do appreciate where Mr.Wilson is coming from. I fear when I look around the city centre I fail to find any new building that could be described as attractive. It would seem that architects these days have totally lost any sense of taste or style.

I can see tourists in the 22nd century wandering around the city, eyeing these buildings and declaring – “Oh look, that’s early 21st century – they didn’t have a clue then, did they?”

That whole Stonebow area is ugly as sin.
Stonebow House - hideous.
BT building - hideous.
The building in the letter - ugly.
The pretentious and out of place sales centre for the stalled development - inappropriate and ugly.
The wasteland created by the last council and their failed plans and compulsory purchase orders - ugly.
The huge new block of flats behind Defra that probably half of York don't even know exists - ugly future ghetto.

The only good thing about the area is the new very handy foot and cycle bridge over the Foss.

Stonebow is an embarrassment for our city.

“The huge new block of flats behind Defra that probably half of York don't even know exists - ugly future ghetto.”

Again I couldn’t agree more – how could they allow that lot to go up? The insidious invasion of unsightly buildings is quite depressing.

I’m thinking of writing a new guide to the city – “The Carbuncles of York”.

I like the flats astride Defra but agree on the building above fibbers. Stonebow on the whole needs a full on revamp.

And now a threat to the derelict White Swan in Piccadilly - not that it's up to much, but better than the "vision" of a contemporary architect, who will scorn anything "in keeping" as not suitable for his/her career portfolio.

As an example of what I anticipate there, see the anodyne construct at the corner of High Ousegate and Coney Street - when this replaced the previous undistinguished modern shops a few years ago, I could hardly tell the difference.

The whole area needs a proper redevelopment. flatten stonebow house, that building that used to house Supersave, part of the BT exchange if BT aren't using it all, and ideally those offices on the corner and calverts carpets - this would allow the road to be straight from Palmer Street right up to whipmawhopmagate, with room on either side for proper bus stop bays. St Saviourgate could be rerouted down to the mini-roundabout so that it can't be used to avoid the rising bollard, and the rest of the street made into a small green space.
