I WONDER if readers might be able to help me with the building I have recently purchased and renovated.
I am seeking any information about the history of the Methodist Chapel in South Bank Avenue, York.
I am looking for early photos of the main chapel built in 1900 and the attached building, which I believe was used as a gymnasium for school children, built in 1910.
The history I already know is as follows and was obtained from the York Open Planning Forum’s website.
The existing building has a memorial stone of 1900 dating from the time it was constructed as the South Bank Mission Chapel. This was an outreach centre from the larger church of St Clement’s, Scarcroft Road.
It was a multi-purpose building functioning as a place of worship before the construction of St Chad’s in 1925/6, as a temporary school by 1906 and a Sunday school in 1931.
The building was a glassworks from about 1968 until I bought it in 2010 with a view to turning it into a residential property. It was also used at some time as a jam factory where Rowntree stored the colourings to make sweets such as fruit pastilles.
