Filthy Foss

I COULD not agree more with Howard Peters about the deplorable state of the River Foss in the city centre (Letters, February 7).

I also live in an apartment overlooking the river and the view of litter and buildings defaced with graffiti is a depressing one.

York is a city that is hoping to be designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and yet the council seems happy to let a river that runs right through the centre of the city to become derelict.

The riverside walk area should, and could, be an area of great beauty. As Mr Peter points out, a boat is supposedly used for cleaning purposes.

Most of the time it lies tied up. When I do spot it on the river it appears to be on some sort of pleasure cruise. Why is the Foss such a mess and is there anything we can do to urge the authorities to clean it up?

From 1991 to 2007 there was a Council team who had a rowing boat and every 4 weeks they cleaned the Foss. They rowed from Foss Islands to Yearsley Bridge and back on the Saturday, collecting everything they came across. They rowed from Foss Islands to Castle Mills on the Sunday doing the same. Any shopping trollies etc they found was piled up on the bankside to be collected in a van when they had finished.
I once lost part of my fishing rod on the stretch of river along Huntington Road, i rang the Council and asked if the crew could retrieve it next time they were out cleaning. Two days later there was a knock at my door and one of the lads handed me the rod, they had got the boat out, rowed up to Huntington Road, retrieved my rod and rowed back, i must add, in there own time!
Then in 2007 they were all relieved of there river cleaning duties and it was given to another department of the Council for whatever reason.......bad move!

The NRA used to also go up and down the river, cleaning etc, but since they became part of the Environments Agency, this also seems to have ceased.

The council-owned boat has been moored up opposite Foss Islands Road, near the footbridge for a few years now - it never seems to move, and is, itself, a bit of a carbuncle.

The boat was used last year to clear a fallen tree, but sadly there isn't any budget for routine tidying.

Perhaps the writer of this letter and his supporters, might like to become part of Camerons big society, and start a volunteer group to do this work, you can count me in.
