Red Champagne

THERE are good and bad in all walks of life, but in my varied and interesting span on earth, the type that annoys me most is the champagne socialist.

There are many examples.

Billy Bragg: strumming his guitar, wears a scruffy sweater to make him look a genuine rebel. Paradox – lives in the best house in an exclusive village near the south coast.

Tony Blair: worth an estimated £60 million, with property all over the place.

Peter Mandelson: Hob-nobs it with multi-millionaires throughout the world.

Tony Benn: formerly Sir Anthony Wedgewood-Benn, renounced his title, but not his wealth.

John K Southern, Brook Street, Selby.

This letter is a gem.
John K. thinks Tony Blair and Mandelson are socialists.

Wow sorry to hear that wealthy socialists have given you so much to feel annoyed about. Well first of all you can feel a little better about Blair and Mandelson. They are not and never were socialists. They hijacked the Labour party in order to satisfy their own middle class sensibilities whilst endorsing and continuing Thatcher’s blinkered policies towards the so called free market. Not entirely sure why you’re so angry with Billy Bragg. He’s a musician who has always sung about social issues and defended the interests of minorities. Maybe it’s just that you don’t like his clothes or the fact that he’s made a decent living whilst working hard. Along the way he’s also given a voice to many minorities. Your attack on Tony Benn shows a real lack of understanding of both socialism and the man himself. There is no requirement within any socialist doctrine to be poor. Quite the opposite in fact the objective is to raise people out of poverty by encouraging a more even distribution of wealth. The major reason behind Mr. Benn’s renouncing his inherited title; a title which gave him automatic access to power and parliament was that he believed in democracy. He believed that it was up to the people he represented to decide who should be in government not some archaic system of favour. Hope your feeling a little better now. Unfortunately I still feel annoyed. I get annoyed that over twenty thousand children starve to death every day because of despot governments and corrupt and greedy business leaders. I get annoyed that as millions starve our government choose to give a further fifty billion pounds of our money to their friends in the city to prop up a failed economic model. And I also get annoyed that after thirty years of following Thatcher’s dogmatic vision it’s still the poorest and most vulnerable in our society who have to pay the price for its failure. Still if in doubt let’s just blame it all on Billy Bragg.

You must understand that ALL politicians are Tories at heart.

Very, very well said redrrr.

Mr Southern claims a "varied and interesting span on earth"
His letter suggests otherwise.

Okay - I hold up my hand! I like champaign and I AM a socialist! If that makes me a "champaign socialist" then fair enough! I'll share my champaign with anyone. (Mind you, I do appreciate that that might make me a "One Nation Tory".)

Seriously though, redrr is spot on as usual. I have no idea who he/she is, but I dearly wish they were PM!

I think I may have miss-spelled/misspel
t "Champaigne/Champagn

Thanks Seadog but I suspect anyone with our views would lose their deposit. Enjoy your champagne.

Mull this one over-
"Conservatives are not necessary stupid, but most stupid people are Conservatives" and I know who said it first!

Weirdly I'm not sure that's true. The people of the UK are crying out for someone to look at the bigger picture and stand for greater equality, (re)nationalisation of public transport, curbs on energy prices but all they get from the Labour Party since Blair (arguably since John Smith) is the same free market rhetoric that the Tories spout, serving only the interests of the rich minority.

The Labour party as a whole realised this in the wake of their defeat, which is why they chose Ed as leader, because he talked slightly more left than his brother and the other candidates. However, they've learnt that if you elect someone with no principles whatsoever, they will just as easily swing to the right when they think it suits them!
