Restored my faith

ON MY many journeys around York by bus, I have encountered, good, bad and sometimes ugly bus drivers; no doubt they could feel the same way regarding their passengers.

However, I felt privileged recently to witness an act of kindness by one driver towards a passenger in distress.

An elderly woman with a child in a pram climbed on board our bus which was heading into York.

As soon as the bus set off, she realised that her house keys were missing because her car was being serviced at the local garage and that they were combined with the car keys.

Since we were now passing the garage in question, the bus driver stopped in a lay-by and waited patiently while she retrieved her keys from the garage.

No doubt he risked being reprimanded by First for misuse of their bus timetables, but I applaud him. He helped restore my faith back in humanity.

Phil Shepherdson, Chantry Close, Woodthorpe, York.

Must have been great for all those people on the bus who were trying to get somewhere (perhaps to a certain time schedule).

Who needs a personal taxi when a bus company can provide the same service at a fraction of the price!

It would have taken a minute or two, nobody would complain if it was happening for them so why not stop being miserable and appreciate the nice gesture. I generally feel sorry for bus drivers, they always get blamed for happenings beyond their control and sticking to the rules their employers enforce. Let's lay off them for a bit. Unless they're unreasonably moody, but that's probably for a reason...
