11:56am Monday 6th February 2012 in Letters By Reader's letter
I HAVE to disagree with David Wilde (Letters, February 1) regarding the retention of the ‘splash palace’ building.
To me, this structure always looked out of place in Parliament Street. David considers this to be a ‘classic’ looking building, but I think it would be more appropriate as part of Disneyland.
Look closely at the overall design and compare with the handsome Barclays Bank building only a few feet away. The splash palace should never have been given planning permission for this prestigious site.
I do agree with the other letter, where Nick Derbyshire calls for a “point de vue” at this location. But please not another Victorian statue – there are more than enough of these throughout the UK. Let’s be more adventurous and go for something modern. The budget for a major work, like the Dublin Spire, may be difficult to raise (no pun intended), but something of more modest proportions by a sculptor such as Antony Gormley would add to the culture of the city.
Alternatively we could erect a plinth and invite the Yorkshire Sculpture Park to exhibit suitable items from their collection.

Apparently, Blackpool Council have expressed interest in buying the tuscan columns and roof !
I wonder if the americans will show an interest, loke they did with London bridge, which ended up in Arizona !
