Global warming answer please

GRAHAM SMITH penned an interesting letter in The Press of February 2, but as usual with regard to global warming his quotes were somewhat one-sided.

It is all very well quoting man’s output of CO2 in massive figures, but there is never a figure quoted as to the amounts of CO2 absorbed naturally by plants etc. This is probably because a measurement of this magnitude would be near-impossible to collate.

Mr Smith says the natural output of CO2 has been balanced by photosynthesis, but man has turned this balance on it head by his outputs of CO2.

Global warming is, allegedly, happening because the sun’s radiated heat strikes earth and is then trapped by a blanket of CO2, thus preventing this heat escaping back into space. This trapping of radiated heat is allegedly causing the earth to get warmer.

If this is the case, why isn’t the radiated heat from the sun prevented from reaching earth because of this blanket of CO2?

Mr Smith poses the question: “What difference to the 17C we should be having were there not the 40 per cent increase in CO2?”.

Well Mr Smith, just what difference would it make as you never answered your own question?

Philip Roe, Roman Avenue South, Stamford Bridge.

"If this is the case, why isn’t the radiated heat from the sun prevented from reaching earth because of this blanket of CO2?"

That's quite a basic question. Can I suggest reading the first two paragraphs on the Wikipedia article on the Greenhouse effect?

First of all remember that the man made element of CO2, including agriculture is only around 2.75% of the total. This fraction could only ever have a minimal amount of influence on climate and yet last year alone more than £40Billion was raised in Green taxes in the UK. Almost half of this money was spent subsidising useless wind turbines giving you the most expensive energy. The other £20+ Billion went to the treasury to spend on who knows what?
If this blanket of CO2 is keeping the heat in, then why do temperatures drop so much at night under clear skies. As 95% of greenhouse gas is water vapour or cloud, then if indeed clouds are the problem then tax water instead. This whole Global Warming / Climate change fiasco remains the biggest scam known to man. Warming and cooling are cyclical and noted in more recent history. The Roman Warm period came to an end as did the Medieval warm period, followed by the Little Ice age to about 1850. Now we are cooling again, No wonder during CO2pehagen 2009 politicians were keen to state the point 'we have to act now.' Thank goodness for those e-mails. Ask yourself what caused any of the previous warm periods to end because it certainly was nothing to do with man. Climate Change is simply a fantastic opportunity to put a tax on fresh air.
Nature does a perfectly good job in regulating our average Earth temperature at around 14.5C with only minor variations. Without Greenhouse gasses this would indeed be a frozen planet. Just follow the money or look out of your window!

When Mount St Helens blew up a few years ago more co2 went into the atmosphere than the whole of the British Industrial revolution " you know , when Josiah Wedgewood and Colebrookdale were chucking out vast quantities of stuff up into the air"

All this is hype and just another excuse to tax us more...Well your getting away with it just now, but wait and see. The camels back comes to mind.

Mickrick, the estimated CO2 output from Mount St Helens was about 0.2 Gigatons. Less than one per cent of human output per year.

smith63, Mount St Helens was only one of many volcanic eruptions and there will be many more to come for certain. There is nothing we can do about that, just as we can't control PPM levels of CO2 , which have always fluctuated. Remember, less than 3% of the total only is associated with man, in other words insignificant and certainly not a tipping point.
The warming the IPCC predict via their computer generated models totally ignore solar activity and therefore take no account of the cooling that will continue until 2030, as happened in the little Ice Age and that's a long cold time.
Politicians are aware of this but there is no money in not demonising CO2.
As mickrick suggests, the people will eventually wake up, probably when they are made aware of huge hidden green taxes and the state propaganda machine, especially harmful to our children.

ColdAsChristmas - I'm not sure where your figures come from, but please explain why a 3% change in the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere would have an insignificant effect. That seems far from obvious.

"If this blanket of CO2 is keeping the heat in, then why do temperatures drop so much at night under clear skies."

Obviously it's not keeping _all_ of the heat in.
