Selling name could fund new stadium

SO THE debate goes on about the new stadium and who pays what – York City, City of York Council and the York City Knights?

What I would like to know is has anybody at York City or the council thought about asking the company who makes all the City shirts – Nike? Who knows, if they agree it could be called the Nike Arena.

After all, we have already got the Reebok Stadium, the Emirates Stadium and the DW Stadium to name a few.

What is there to lose? All people want is to get a final decision and for building work to begin.

Andrew Wood, Stuart Road, York.

Good idea, though setting your sights at Nike is a bit optimistic. Burtons ground though is similar - Sponsored by Pirelli. I'm sure this avenue has been explored, plus it will give the council revenue/funds to build the stadium.

Should not the people who actually go to the stadium to watch matches pay for it York City get an average gate of about 3,000 but the population of York is about 200,000 so 197,000 are not interested (Including me)

I don't go to theatres,parks,swimm
ing pools or art galleries,so why should I pay for them through my council tax?

Because:
1) York council will end up making money from the venture through rental incomes.
2) Because YCFC is a part of Yorks wider culture, like it or not.

And:
The majority of the build is not being paid for by taxpayers, but by Oakgate, private investment.

Spot on and its hardly the same 3000 who go each time. A football club is so much more than average gate.
Wonder what its like to have a mind that can only talk in cliché - Cherokee, can you help me there?

cherokee - I assume you aren't good at maths.

1) 3,000 when in the Conference, a team which takes more away supporters with them than most Div 1 or 2 teams.

2) A Team, when in the Conference, sold out 5,000 tickets for the FA Cup, away at Bolton.

3) A team which got near 7,000 in for a CONFERENCE play off game.

4) A team which took 14,000 to Wembley, as a Conference side.

York City is York's sports team (sure, very little go to the rugby) in the world's most popular sport. It is a flagship of this city's culture (I guess you weren't originally from York due to your lack of knowledge).

In fact, citing your numbers for the size of York and the support levels for the club, the percentage is actually in line with some Premiership clubs, their size of city and attendances.

I'm guessing you would prefer sport to only be the racecourse and its drunken hooligans, whilst sat in the middle of town with your coffee and gift shops, but show some respect for people York born and bred.

You move here, you respect that.

To Andrew Wood - a good letter, but Nike would be aiming too high unless Premiership. Naming rights would be one revenue stream regardless.

A big York business like Rowntree Nestle needs to start putting their money where their mouth is.

Other suggestions, continuing mickrick's theme;

'Oakford Stadium'

or

'Guildgate Stadium'
