Disappointing day out

ONE of my children offered to take me by train to Birmingham on January 24 and I jumped at the chance.

On arrival, I wanted to see the Bullring, which turned out to be across from the station. First object was to have a nice lunch, but I was soon told the place lacked an English restaurant except for a café on the fourth flour of Debenhams.

I asked if there was a nice eating place nearby and was told if I went right through the centre and outside on the right a new place called Browns was within walking distance.

After lunch and a short shop in the centre, the train was due, so went back to the station and asked for the toilets. Not here, I was told, but through the barriers. Very good, but when I asked if there was a lift to the platform I was told to go back through the barrier where a lift to the platform could be found.

I was disappointed with my day out as I was told Birmingham Station had been modernised and the Bullring was famous.

I found neither to be the case, perhaps I was misinformed.

Dennis Barton, Woodthorpe, York.

Birmingham is an easy target even though people forget that it has the UK's National Exhibition Centre with its 11,000 seat concert Arena, the separate National Indoor Arena and a world-class concert hall.
Good grief it even has kept its major stores in the city centre, no need to drive to out-of-town Macarthurs or Monks Crosses.
I suspect the letter was included by Julian Cole just to see if he got a response.
If so, Julian, you win.
I fell for it.

I actually just walked to the car. Birmingham is too far
The supermarket was closer
But that left me with a poser
Should I go home where it's warm,
I dunno, I'm a little torn.

Spot on Hicarrumba,
Birmingham is so close to Shakespeare's birthplace of Stratford-upon-Avon that even shopping there is poetry.
