Splash Palace idea

IN response to “Splash Palace to be pulled down” (The Press, January 17) may I suggest to the council that they convert the so-called splash palace into a police and community officers’ station.

It is ideally situated as the above has a spacious office area with kitchen and below could be converted into cells for day or night trouble causers. It would also make a community spot for tourists and York citizens and would be convenient for all.

Excellent idea! Let's have one way windows on all four sides with cameras behind trained on everybody going past to monitor what they get up to. If they've not done anything wrong, they've got nothing to fear.

"It was terribly dangerous to let your thoughts wander when you were in any public place or within range of a telescreen. The smallest thing could give you away. A nervous tic, an unconscious look of anxiety, a habit of muttering to yourself – anything that carried with it the suggestion of abnormality, of having something to hide. In any case, to wear an improper expression on your face (to look incredulous when a victory was announced, for example) was itself a punishable offense. There was even a word for it in Newspeak: facecrime, it was called. "

And yet, statistically speaking, it is. Very safe indeed. What on earth would people be queueing up to report to the PCSOs in their little smelly bunker???

So the streets of York should not be safe at night, Buzz?

You think that 'fortified post' should be manned 24hrs a day then? Because it will rarely be used to prevent violent crime during the day. I can imagine how unnerving such a building will look to the tourists who come into the centre of town, whose cash the city needs. It will metaphorically become a grey tower stretching into the clouds, overshadowing everything below it. Is this the police state you were looking for?

@Whipmawhopmagate, we have a right to privacy, family lives, freedoms of speech/expression/as
sembly. If people don't understand this and start offering away the populaces legal rights on a platter then don't act shocked when you wake up one day and realise the mess you've got yourself into. Some of us won't let that situation develop though, we'll provide the voice of reason even if a small minority think they are the voice of sanity.

In principle, I agree YSTClinguist, and the only legitimate reason for the existence of a State is to ensure these freedoms for its citizens.
Without sufficient authority they cannot be protected.
The result would be anarchy.

Not relevant.
You used an attack in the middle of the night to illustrate a claim that York isn't safe in daylight.
Either you made a bad argument or you mis-read the story and thought it happened at 2.30pm.
I made a joke about it.

You exemplify a huge malaise in society these days, Whip.
Everyone makes mistakes all the time, we're human.
Yet fewer and fewer are prepared to just hold their hands up and admit it. Instead they attack others to distract attention.
Sometimes it just ends up with boring internet flaming, sometimes it ends up in road rage, legal action, assault or worse.

If it was the other way round I would have laughed at myself, seen the humour... I'd say something like "Oh yeah silly me, of course 2.30am isn't daylight but you take my point"
To which the obvious reply for anyone would have been "Hoho, no biggie, of course your point stands"
But no, here we are 5 posts later way off-topic.

Buzzlightyear,
Yes of course I was wrong about the time, but apart from that, my comment was valid in that the attack took place only yards away and the streets should be kept safe 24 hours/day.
