My return to Grays Court

Recently, to celebrate my 80th birthday, my family arranged for my husband and I to return to Grays Court.

Although from time to time we have called in to see this lovely old house, which was owned by the Gray family for 200 years, it always seemed rather dead and depressing as it had not been actively lived in for a very long time.

Now, however, everything has changed and since it has been in private hands the place has come to life and is wonderful.

Thanks to the loving and understanding care of the new owners, the house is now beautifully furnished, mostly with old furniture, and the walls decorated to give just the right atmosphere. I am sure my relatives, whom I used to visit as a child, would be thrilled to see what has become of the place. The main thing is it has moved with the times and has a lovely warm feel to it and all the staff are so helpful.

What seems to me so good is that there is now the possibility for the public to experience the grandeur of this truly historic building. This is surely progress and how everyone would wish it to be.

Helen M Davy (née Gray – great niece of Edwin and Almyra Gray), Cheltenham.

I am glad Helen Davy enjoyed her return to Gray's Court, and can understand her pleasure at seeing it back in "private" hands. I would, however, like to assure her that those of us who were fortunate enough to have been English, History or Theology students (or tutors) at St John's College in the 60s/70s/80s really appreciated it too. It was very much the jewel in the college's crown, and other departments were deeply envious! I may never have "lived" in the building, but there is a real sense in which I regard it as my academic "home".
