I HAVE received information that the existing council protocol that concerns Monk Stray, which is due to run until 2013, is being amended and that a decision by the Executive Member is to be made today. Could someone please advise me why this is necessary?

There is already a problem with car parking in the area, not to mention the build-up of traffic at events. Then there is the noise factor for people who live around the Stray and beyond.

There is also the mention of the provision of alcohol at some events which will lead to further problems.

Monk Stray has been a popular open space used by many to enjoy the fresh air and green surroundings. It would seem that our new council is looking to make money out of anything that the city owns to the detriment of its residents.

Jean Longhurst, Pottery Lane, Heworth, York.

Charlie Croft, assistant director, lifelong learning and culture, said: “The council’s revised events protocol contains no changes concerning Monk Stray.

“Furthermore, the kind of events that Ms Longhurst seems to be envisaging would require a premises licence, which Monk Stray does not have.

“We have no plans to apply for an events licence for Monk Stray but if, at any time in the future, we did the application would have to go through the formal licensing application procedure and would be open to public scrutiny and comment.”
