James Alexander on Joe Watt

I READ with interest the letter by Joe Watt, the sole Conservative councillor for Skelton, Rawcliffe and Clifton Without (Letters, September 10).

Joe’s views are as inconsistent as recent Government policy over the NHS, forests and penal reform. He is exhibiting a familiar pattern of the York Conservatives: vote for the policy and then switch sides to criticise.

Joe criticised the council for increasing the council’s contribution to our Park&Ride bid to the Government, despite the council following the advice from his Government that councils need to increase their contribution if councils are to be successful in receiving funding.

While representing the Conservatives at the appropriate committee, he voted to increase the council contribution. Conservatives voted for the policy and then switched sides to criticise.

Furthermore, the council is purchasing some of the land behind the station to jump start the development. Joe criticised this and said “the council does not need” this land. Yet his leader, Coun Ian Gillies, voted for the purchase.

Conservatives express one view in the council and another outside.

Coun James Alexander, Labour Leader of City of York Council.

Joe is the "sole" Conservative councillor for Skelton, Rawcliffe and Clifton Without, as you say James.
Unless things have changed recently, the other two are Lib Dems for Rawcliffe and Clifton is still WITHOUT.
OH! WHERE ARE LABOUR?

Sorry George - you've got it wrong. The Ward has 3 councillors, Joe was returned at the May election. However, the Lib-Dem candidates were defeated by 2 Labour candidates. Therefore, the Ward is represented by One Conservative and 2 labour councillors.

James has deliberately mis-represented the point. The bid for the Park & Rides is fully supported by the Conservatives. However, James should fund it from within his budget. He should not borrow more millions to pay for it - he needs to learn to live within his means - something socialist find impossible to do.

'he needs to learn to live within his means - something socialist find impossible to do.”

Throwing around insults on a comments section?! That's professional of you Councillor Watt. Are you suggesting that everyone who voted Labour is a 'socialist' or 'can't live within their means'? Guess you're making a reference to the banking crisis. Did you support John Redwood and George Osborne calling for the RELAXATION of banking regulation in 2007?............

Sorry Joe, is there a difference?

And can you believe that Joewatt has referred to himself in the third person. This may suggest that he meant to post in one of his 'other accounts'? just a thought.

Why as a life-long Labour voter do I find myself cringing when I read Mr Alexander? Personal attacks via the Press is NOT the way to make a difference to people's lives. Stop wasting this opportunity you've been given and concentrate on policy, not personality.

Spot on I think. Either he meant to post under a pseudonym, or he's taken to referring to himself in the third person - never a good sign!
