Killing pheasants for pleasure is wrong

IN RESPONSE to Pamela Frankland, I must voice my support for the view taken by Brenda Mackfall (Letters, January 22).

Killing for pleasure is inherently wrong.

These despicable people rear pheasants then set them free to pursue and kill. Until a respect for these beautiful creatures matures in them and they learn to control their blood lust, we have to live with this legal pursuit, but need not condone it.

Exactly that Eileen, they are set free and enjoy a free life. If they are shot they will be eaten by a member of the shoot. Isn't that a better life than battery chickens have ??
If it wasn't for shoots releasing pheasents there would be much less food available for wild birds as the feeders installed by shoots are available to all birds.Shooting is good for the countryside in many ways and is a welcome additional income to farms.Shooting is not all toffs gentry its a country sport enjoyed by people from all walks of life.

Quite right. I don't think anyone shoots pheasant purely for pleasure. Never done it myself but I'm pretty sure when I've seen it that the pheasant are collected and sold/eaten and not just left. As you say it is a much better life than a chicken/pig/other edible animal has!

This is qualitatively different. As said, unlike meat in your supermarket, it might get away
