Unreliable local public transport forcing us back to our cars?

IN THE Press of September 1, two letters appeared about the unreliable local public transport.

First Group is now withdrawing some early morning and late evening services.

Those affecting Acomb and Holgate district mean we will have no service to get us into town either for an early start for work or to catch a train to get us to work.

The reason given for this is to “improve reliability”. How will the withdrawing of these services improve reliability? It is later in the day that buses run late, if at all.

The people who make these decisions should realise that not all workers work 9am to 5pm, as it would seem they do.

The public so inconvenienced will resort to using taxis or their own cars; so much for cutting back on the use of same.

AP Cox, Heath Close, Holgate, York.

Make those who make the decision use the public transport to get into work then see how quick they are to use the same excuse. It is no more than a money saving policy that is why services are cut.

I am one of the two per-cent of customers that use the early morning service, and I now have no way of getting to work on Saturdays. I suffer with M.E. which means that walking or cycling from Haxby is out of the question. My only way to now get to town is to ask friends for lifts, which at 6am on a Saturday is not really an option. there were 11 people on the bus this morning from Haxby to town, i'd hardly say that that was an empty bus. I don't understand how removing services will help reliability for the people who rely on them.

Thatcher deregulated the bus industry. Hang on..didn't she also stick in her oar over the Channel Tunnel being rail only "We would all like to get into our cars and drive to France...."

It is, absolutely, a money saving policy. That is what First Group are all about.
They do not provide a public service for the people of York (or anywhere else). There sole aim is to please their shareholders, whatever their spokesperson might say.

And the only thing that is wrong with First is that they do not come out and say it. We are not stupid, money is the sole motivator in a capitalist economy, and especially in a capitalisit monopoly, which is what FIrst have.

Anybody ever thought of using smaller buses which would be a lot cheaper and would not need a P S V driver also the P & R would be much more used if the charge was per car and not per person (I think Ihave said this before)

Cherokee: so who's going to pay for this fleet of vehicles? And how are they going to pay their way the rest of the day?

Sadly, First can do as they please; they are NOT a public service, as others have pointed out above, they're in it solely for profit.
