Supporting 20mph zone in Heworth

I AM pleased that Coun Steve Galloway has decided to support the 20mph zone in Heworth (The Press, September 1).

We have been petitioning the council to introduce 20mph in residential areas in York for the past three years, but this has been blocked by Coun Galloway until recently.

Only after many people signed our petitions did Coun Galloway agree to pilot areas.

It seems that he has had a welcome change of heart, and I look forward to seeing safer, quieter and less polluted streets as 20mph spreads across the city.

Coun Ruth Potter, Labour transport spokesperson, Chaucer Street, York.

Well you did not think he would oppose it did you?

The letter is misleading. Ruth Potter has been petitioning for a default 20 mph limit across the whole of York. Residents will be able to give their verdict on thsi suggestion when a poll is conducted through the next edition of "Your City".
The Councils current policy is to apply 20 mph speed limits where there is a particular accident risk. An area on Heworth Road, outside the school, meets that criteria and hence has been given the go ahead.

Then why, Lib dem, has it taken so long to be put in place? It has been requested for several years after all. Would it be being cynical to suggest that it has only now been agreed because of the impending council elections next May and it would give your Parties candidate something to boast about, despite the long campaign by the sitting councillors? Surely not. The road outside Heworth School should have been included when the speed restriction was applied outside other schools, was it not council policy at the time?
