Unfair on social housing in Tadcaster

Tadcaster resident Ian Laidlaw Wilson’s doom-laden screed could have given a misleading account of the excellent record of social housing in this brewery town (Letters, August 16 ).

Mr Laidlaw Wilson’s claim regarding social housing is unfair to the late lamented Tadcaster Rural District Council, which had a good record for providing council housing. This was regardless of which party was in power locally or nationally.

Eventually, Tadcaster social housing was inherited by Selby District Council.

I know that a Tadcaster nonagenarian recently received a letter from Selby District Council informing her that if she did not tidy up the back garden of her council bungalow, she risked losing the tenancy of the dwelling.

Interestingly, the property had previously been referred to as sheltered housing.

So Mr Laidlaw Wilson need not concern himself about supposed Tory ghettos in the future. Well… not at Tadcaster!

Ida Mary Goodrick, Woodlands Avenue, Tadcaster.
