'Grumpy old woman' recalls true greats

ANDREW HITCHON was spot on with his column (The Press, August 24). You can definitely put me down as a grumpy old woman, Andrew.

Where do I begin? Andrew has already compared unfavourably modern cinema with films of yesteryear, but what of the stars? There is no comparison between the vegan stick-insects of today with their appalling dress sense and badly cut hair.

Where are the likes of Ava Gardner, Elizabeth Taylor, Rita Hayworth and Marilyn Monroe? And as for the men! We swooned over Stewart Granger, Marlon Brando, Paul Newman and Steve McQueen. Why Robert Mitchum could have put ‘tiny’ Tom Cruise in his top pocket!

Oh Lord, you’ve got me started on music. And, no, I’m not just banging on about Sinatra, Dean Martin, Matt Munro etc, there were The Beatles, The Eagles, The Rolling Stones, Police, Status Quo – no wonder such a lot of them are coming out of retirement at 50-plus. They’ve got no competition today.

Some of the modern bands remind me of when my son massacred his first drum kit. As for Reality TV!! – No, I just can’t go on – not in a family newspaper.
