THERE have been reports and letters regarding the proposed waste management plant near Boroughbridge which includes a large incinerator plant. This has been proposed to handle waste from currently going to landfill.

It may surprise some to discover there is another significant proposal which involves the importation of large amounts of commercial and industrial waste, and is located within the greater York boundary at the western end of Wheldrake parish, on the former North Selby mine site.

The proposal involves a gassification plant (a type of incinerator) which will process up to 140,000 tonnes of waste per year and also an anaerobic digestion plant which will process up to 50,000 tonnes per year of “green waste”. All vehicles associated with the proposal will enter and leave via the busy A19, just north of Escrick.

There are key issues involved with this proposal and Wheldrake Parish Council is concerned that City of York Council has declared this is not part of any local waste strategy.

There will be an opportunity to view the proposals and talk to the developers at a “roadshow” to be held in Church Cottage on Thursday September 23, from 4.30pm to 7pm.
