Rowntree name on the rise again

BACK in 1988, when Nestlé bought the Rowntree company, there was – perhaps inevitably – a sense that the new owners really weren’t very interested in the Rowntree name and the extraordinary history which came with it. But I detect a significant change in recent times.

For whatever reason, Nestlé has now come to understand the importance of the work and ideas of the Rowntree family, and the fact that the Rowntree name still resonates today.

The company has even brought out new products bearing the name (such as Rowntree’s Randoms).

So, at the Rowntree Society we are delighted that the hunt is on for people who recall the original KitKat production line (The Press, August 13). We urge Press readers with relevant information or contacts to “give the company a break” – and share what you know with Nestlé.

Many people have heard of Seebohm Rowntree but few will appreciate his fantastic legacy to the UK. It was he, along with William Booth, the founder of the Salvation army, whose work led to the creation of the welfare state. In fact, whilst Booth's work focussed on London, it was Rowntree's detailed work on poverty and pauperism in York that propelled the massive welfare changes of the early twentieth century. Seebohm deserves our respect.
