Bring big wheel back to York

THE Press reported on July 22 that hopes of bringing the big wheel back to York seem to be diminishing.

We had the wheel outside the National Railway Museum and this brought visitors to York, who spout quite a lot of money into York’s coffers.

Two sites were put forward to the city planners. These were found unsuitable by City of York Council.

When is the council going to open its eyes and see what tourism this wheel brought into the city and what tourists spent coming here?

Also, we see the yearly ice rink being suspended because too much noise is produced from the rink and upsets the law courts, etc.

Surely these excuses given for the wheel and ice rink to be here are trivial.

Do the residents of York have a say on this? Why should we have to go to Leeds/Sheffield to go on the big wheel or go ice skating?

People would do day trips if we had these two, and spend money here rather than in other cities or towns.

• “WHEEL” they or won’t they, is the cry which haunts the corridors of power with regard to a new site for the big wheel to be sited in York.

Would not Rowntree Park be a suitable location, providing it is free from floods? However, this could be restricted when it comes to access, depending on the time of the year.

Providing the approach is conducive and in keeping with a Georgian promenade, which was a feature in those days, plus incorporating a ringside feature, for example a drop-off point for river traffic. This approach could only enhance the historical background of York as a tourist attraction.

The revenue accrued would more than compensate for any eventuality that may arise.
