Call for plain English

THE street signs (perish the modern word ‘signage’) advising us of likely delays on Sunday because of a Sports Event are very welcome.

But why “Expect Delays To Local Networks”? What local networks? Gas? Electricity? Telephone? Computer? Train?

This is yet another example of verbosity by haters of Plain English. All that is necessary is “Expect Delays”.

Why not say it simply? Why complicate things? Even notices advising bus diversions are now talking about “Street Cars”.

John Ibbott, Tedder Road, Acomb, York.
