Sporting boost for York

IT IS wonderful that as a city we now have some part to play in the 2012 Olympics, with the deal clinched to host Gambian athletes in York and now further moves to approach other countries (The Press, June 8).

I know that from the start, the main players in this were the University of York St John and I would like to thank them for all they have done. Without their help, I wonder if we would have succeeded to engage with and encourage Gambia’s athletes to base themselves here.

Coun Sonja Crisp, Labour spokesperson for leisure and culture, Emperors Wharf, Skeldergate, York.

St John's College is to the British education system what The Gambian team are to the Olympics.

I think you have a point there Phantom!
As for Spokeslady Crisp, her letter would have been more relevant if should could have confirmed that York will indeed have a community stadium with track facilities for the athletes and York citizens alike instead of sucking up to St John's.
