Unfair to Clement Attlee

STEVE Broadhurst (Letters, June 10) makes the same mistake as many who lump together people and events and generalise so-called facts.

He accuses, for instance, Clement Attlee of leaving this country almost bankrupt. I do not know Steve’s age, but I remember Mr Attlee as deputy PM running this country during the war while Churchill ran the war itself.

After the war, when this country was more bankrupt than now, Mr Attlee led a Labour Government which started to put the country back together again. The administration started the recovery and also created the NHS, the most successful organisation for good ever created.

I am proud to vote Labour, biased certainly, but the good done by truly great men of whatever political persuasion should not be dismissed and forgotten.

Dennis Barton, Woodthorpe, York.
