Normandy Veterans fought for our very existence

By Reader's letter

I have just spent one of those interesting experiences that come along once in a lifetime.

Having the honour bestowed on me, after being Lord Mayor, of being made an honorary Normandy Veteran, I was invited to attend the celebrations with them over the weekend of June 6 in Normandy.

The beaches seemed to come alive with the history they hold, the Vets were welcomed on every street corner by people, not only from that area but by visitors from all the allied countries who were attending.

They not only asked them about their memories, but in every case thanked them for their contributions in bringing peace to Europe, and virtually queued up to have a photo taken with them.

I can’t repeat here everything that happened that weekend, but suffice to say that we all owe these men who fought for our very existence and we should never forget them that gave their all for peace I hope you can include the picture I took of some of them at Pegasus Bridge.

It was a privilege to have been with these gentlemen and their memories.
