Double roundabout trouble

In recent days, at 8:30am, where the A64 bypass crosses over the York-Selby road, I’ve noticed more and more drivers using the roundabout on the Fulford side as a way to jump the queue into York, thereby blocking folk like me leaving town to turn towards Leeds.

Aside from adding an air of symmetry to the signs along the A19 by the Designer Outlet on the one hand, and rewarding impatience on the other, is there a valid traffic reason for having two roundabouts at that junction?

Roderic Vassie, Belle Vue Cottages, York.

You could always catch the P&R to the station, and then take a train.....!

Or if you were really clever you could go all the way on a bike.

For Roderic from Belle Vue Cottages it would be bike to the station or the ftr no 4 but it depends where he is going to in Leeds as to which is easier. As for the original question the only use for that part of the roundabout would be for vehicles coming from York that want to do a U turn and as he points out the other roundabout for the designer outlet provides the same function if needed.

The A19 is terrible in the morning; the sensible driver heading for York centre from the east bank will use the A1079 which is dual carriageway for some length and has a convenient "bus lane" for the needy car driver.

Your car is everyone else's traffic.....!

This kind of double-roundabout setup is increasingly common across the country on motorways and trunk roads.

Firstly, it is cheaper to build - the bridge span on the main road can be much narrower than if it has to cover the full width of a large roundabout.

Secondly, by having smaller diameter roundabouts, you can reduce traffic speed on the roundabout, which makes it easier for vehicles to join the roundabout.

Thirdly, in this instance, it means that traffic coming out of the Designer Outlet / P&R and turning right towards Selby doesn't have to go all the way round the roundabout.

The simple solution to your problem (which I suffer with as well) would be for them to block off that section of the roundabout. There is no good reason for anyone to need to use it - if anyone has gone wrong and needs to turn round, they can use the southern roundabout. Blocking it off would prevent drivers coming up the A19 and off the A64 from queue-jumping by going once round the roundabout, and would not cause any serious inconvenience to legitimate manoeuvres.
