We should like to add our own tribute to Jack Archer and also support the call for a memorial service in his honour.

For more than two decades, from the early 1960s, Jack gave so generously of his time, experience and knowledge giving tremendous support and guidance as a trustee to his fellow trustees and also to the residents of the Walker Barstow Homes Trust in Bishopthorpe Road, York, and his involvement as a trustee continued even when he became Lord Mayor for the first time

His marvellous work for our small local almshouse charity which provides accommodation, security and independence for up to 19 older people in need We should like to add our own tribute to Jack Archer and also support the call for a memorial service in his honour.

For more than two decades, from the early 1960s, Jack gave so generously of his time, experience and knowledge giving tremendous support and guidance as a trustee to his fellow trustees and also to the residents of the Walker Barstow Homes Trust in Bishopthorpe Road, York, and his involvement as a trustee continued even when he became Lord Mayor for the first time within a ten-mile radius from Lendal Main Post Office will not be forgotten. He was indeed a champion of the elderly and devoted to helping others.

• It was an honour to be present to say goodbye to a good friend in the voluntary sector when I attended Jack Archer’s funeral.

The two readers, Sally Hutchinson of Age Concern and Bob Towner of the Older People’s Assembly said it all.

Personally he did “shine a light” to many. All of us in the voluntary sector must carry on in his footsteps, helping the community the best way we can.
