The TV journalist Donal MacIntyre’s investigation (Questions over Claudia probe, The Press, March 15) highlights interesting points in the Claudia Lawrence case.
The fact that her bed might not have been slept in could have focused early attention elsewhere with the investigation. However, forensic examinations would have confirmed this either way, and surely this must have been done.
Donal also claimed it took nine months for police to question drivers who had used a Shell garage on Claudia’s route to work. Perhaps the police line of investigation led in more productive directions?
All this speculation by him, however, does not give any extra focal points of inquiry, apart from to keep Claudia at the forefront of the public’s mind on this sad anniversary of her disappearance.
This, however, does highlight a growing problem with York regarding crime. “If only” must be the saddest words in the English language, but “if only” we could return to the local bobby on the beat, then perhaps this and other shocking headlines in The Press could be prevented or averted?
Eyes and ears of the whole community offer a powerful message to wrongdoers that they will be discovered and brought to justice.
